DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS

·      Biblically based education – CCHS is founded and operates on Biblical principles. Students are encouraged to evaluate and interpret what they learn from a Biblical perspective.

·      Christian character development - Education is to be delivered in a positive, Christ-like environment. In all things students, teachers, staff, and volunteers should endeavor to exhibit Christian character and behavior as described by Paul in Romans 12:9 – 21.

·      Multicultural education – The school will provide an accepting and multicultural atmosphere. We will endeavor to provide an understanding of the world’s cultures and help students to discern between cultural and spiritual issues.

·      Semi-open enrollment – Student acceptance to the school will not be determined based on church affiliation or attendance, nor based on any profession of belief, but rather upon contractual agreement to abide by and support school philosophies, policies, requirements, and methods. In addition to the application, all prospective students and their parents will be interviewed to make sure that both parent and student understand all of CCHS’s philosophies, policies, requirements, and methods.

·      Revelatory approach to Biblical teaching – The Bible will be taught holistically as a truth discovering journey rather than dogmatically. An attempt will be made to represent the various understandings of scripture where they exist. Emphasis will be placed on comprehending the historical, cultural, and literal aspects of scripture allowing the Holy Spirit to reveal the spiritual significance.

·      Academic Integrity – CCHS is committed to teaching to the whole child – body, soul, and spirit. Education will focus on the essentials – reading, writing, literature, foreign languages, history, math, science, and Biblical studies. Art, music, PE, and vocational skills will be incorporated as resources allow. Lessons will build on the students’ prior knowledge and experience, relate to their lives, and foster a love of learning.

Four Year Growth Plan

CCHS will open in the fall of 2012 with just a single 9th grade class and one full time teacher for the core subjects. Then, in the fall of 2013 those 9th graders will return as 10th graders and we will add a new 9th grade class and a second full time teacher for math and science; Mr. Carlton will continue to teach Language and History.

In each subsequent year we will grow by one grade and one teacher so that by the 2015-16 school year we will be a full, four year high school with a full time certified teacher for each of the core areas: math, science, language, and history.

Accreditation

CCHS is pursuing accreditation with the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Northwest Accreditation Commission. Accreditation is a several year process; however, we will complete the process in time for the freshmen who begin attending in 2012 to graduate from an accredited school in 2016.

Educational Philosophy

Aristotle once said that, “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” We believe that Aristotle tapped into several critical elements of education in this single sentence. First, is the idea that an education requires more than just memorizing a list of facts and figures; the student must make some emotional connection to the material in order to own what he or she has learned. Secondly, is the concept echoed by the old cliché, “People don’t care how much we know until they know how much we care.” In order to truly promote intellectual growth in a student, the teacher must also foster emotional growth through interpersonal support and encouragement. Lastly, it speaks to the education of character that produces a citizen capable of putting the knowledge they’ve gained to positive and productive uses.

Because, like Aristotle, we believe it is essential to educate both the heart and mind of a student, we believe that students learn best when both their intellect and their emotions are engaged. Therefore, CCHS teachers will present material, as much as possible, in a manner which builds upon the students’ prior knowledge and/or experience, and allows them to discover and/or experience its relevance to their current or future lives. Granted, this is not always possible, but it will always be striven for. It is also essential to create an environment in which the student feels safe and as if they are part of a team of discoverers, rather than participants in a cutthroat competition in which there can be only one victor.

Above all other academic considerations, a love of learning will be fostered so that the students become life-long learners, not simply high school graduates. We believe that in an effort to encourage our students to “stay in school and get a diploma,” our society has given them the false impression that the purpose of attending school is to obtain a document when they have finished, rather than the knowledge, skills, and experiences gained along the way.

STATEMENT OF BELIEF

Our basic philosophy towards church doctrine is to:
  • look for unity in the essentials
  • allow for liberty in the non-essentials
  • in all things – act in love.

Following, then, is what we believe to be “the essentials”

  • We believe that there is one God, the maker of heaven and earth, of things visible and invisible – eternally existent in three Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (I Cor. 8:6, Eph 4:6, John 10:30, Eph 2:18, John 1:1 – 5 & 14)
  • We believe the Bible is inspired by God, is fully trustworthy, and is the final standard for faith and life. (2 Tim 3:16 – 17)
  • We believe in the Deity and Lordship of Jesus Christ.  He is the Son of God in human flesh, possessing both divine and human natures in one indivisible person.  We believe in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory. (I Cor 8:6; John 1:1 – 5, & 14; Luke 1:26 – 27, 30 – 31, 34 – 35; Heb 7:26 – 27, 9:11 – 14; Acts 1:9 – 11, 2:22 – 24, 29 – 33;  I Thes 4:16)
  • We believe all aspects of salvation - past, present, and future, are received only through faith, as a gift of God's grace, on the basis of the blood of Jesus Christ. (Eph 2:8 – 9)
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit who indwells every true follower of Jesus Christ, empowers followers to live God-honoring lives, and seals every follower of Christ, guaranteeing what is to come. (John 14:26; Acts 1:8; Rom 14:17, 5:13; I Cor 6:19; Eph 1:13 – 14)
  • We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead and judgment of all. (Heb 9:27, John 5:28 – 29)
  • We believe that all true followers of Jesus Christ comprise one universal Church expressed through multiple and diverse local assemblies.  We accept the obligation to love one another and together share the love of God with the world. (I Cor 1:2, Eph 5:23, 27, 29 – 30, Rom 12:4 – 5)

As a student or parent of a student at Confluence Christian High School, you need not agree with the above statement of belief. However, all staff and faculty, whether employed or as a volunteer, do agree with the CCHS Statement of Belief. Further, all CCHS operations and policies flow out of these beliefs.

By enrolling in CCHS all students and their parents agree to abide by and support the policies stated in the Parent & Student Handbook.
